The United States Department of State (“DOS”) has consular officers’ authority to waive in-person interviews for certain nonimmigrant visas from January 1, 2024 through December 31, 2024.
The announcement, which was made on December 21, 2023 replaces the previous policy extending nonimmigrant visa waivers through December 31, 2023 and allows DOS consular officers to continue to waive in-person interviews for both renewing and first-time applicants on a case-to-case basis for the following nonimmigrant visa categories:
- H-2 Temporary Agricultural and Non-Agricultural Visas
- Other nonimmigrant visa applicants applying for any nonimmigrant visa categories who were previously issued a nonimmigrant visa in any category unless the only prior issued nonimmigrant visa was a B-1/ B-2 visitor visa and are applying within forty-eight (48) months of their most recent nonimmigrant visa expiration date.
Implementation of this authority is scheduled to commence on January 1, 2024 and will be reviewed annually. Consular officers may still require in-person interviews on a case-to-case basis or because of other conditions.
