Passport Revocation for Child Support Arrears

On May 7, 2026, the United States Department of State (“DOS”) announced that it will begin revoking U.S. passports for certain individuals with outstanding child support arrears.

Under existing federal regulations (22 CFR §51.62) and DOS policy guidance (7 FAM 1754), DOS may deny or revoke a U.S. passport when the Department of Health and Human Services (“DHHS”) certifies that an individual owes more than US$2,500 in child support.

Although this authority has existed for years, the announcement signals increased enforcement efforts. According to recent reports, the initial phase may focus on individuals with arrears exceeding US$100,000, with broader enforcement potentially expanding to all individuals owing more than US$2,500.

Once revoked, a passport may no longer be used for international travel. In most cases, the individual will not become eligible for a new passport until DHHS certifies that the child support arrears have been resolved.

If an individual is overseas at the time of revocation and remains in arrears, they may contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to request a limited-validity passport for direct return travel to the United States.

How to Petition Your Vietnamese Spouse for a U.S. Green Card

Marriage to a U.S. Citizen does not automatically grant a Vietnamese spouse the right to live permanently in the United States. Before a Vietnamese spouse can immigrate to the United States, the U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (“Petitioner”) must first establish the marital relationship, complete the required documentation and have the process go through the U.S. immigration system. Multiple government agencies are involved including United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”), the United States Department of State (“DOS”), National Visa Center (“NVC”) and the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City. Each stage has separate forms, evidence requirements and deadlines. At Enterline and Partners, our U.S. immigration lawyers assist Petitioners with a spouse in Vietnam who would like to bring their Vietnamese spouses to the United States permanently. In this guide, we explain the sponsorship process, the difference between filing as a U.S. Citizen or a Lawful Permanent

Green Card Through Investment: Is the EB-5 Visa Worth It for Vietnamese Investors?

For many Vietnamese families, the EB-5 “Immigrant Investor” visa is one of the most direct ways to pursue U.S. lawful permanent residence (“Green Card”). However, EB-5 is not simply a matter of investing money and receiving a Green Card. Instead, it is a highly regulated U.S. immigration visa category with detailed requirements. Vietnamese investors should understand the investment amount, Source of Funds (“SOF”) documentation, the path of funds in making the investment, Project risks, processing timeline, and consular process before deciding whether EB-5 is worth it. In 2026, this decision is especially important as the required EB-5 investment is substantial. Moreover, for Vietnamese citizens, local issues such as real estate proceeds, business income, currency transfers, and interview processing can all affect the case. Enterline and Partners helps Vietnamese investors evaluate EB-5 eligibility, prepare source of funds documentation, and plan the next steps toward a Green Card through investment.  Managing Partner
